No Successor!

- Kamehameha didn't choose a successor after her died, so no one knew who was going to take his place.

A Leader was Born

- Lunalilo became king in 1873 after an informal election was held.

No Successor Broken Record

- Once again like Kamehameha, Lunalilo died without a successor as well.

- Kalakaua was a good candidate for the throne, but Queen emma had more connections, and seemed to have a better chance at winning.

And the Decision Making Begins...

- 9 days after Lunalilo's death, the legislature, mostly made up of Hawaiians, came together to choose a new ruler.

Kalakaua Wins!

- Kalakaua won the election, 39 to 6

The British...and Americans are Coming!

- After the election, the boat parked in Honolulu Harbor came ashore to halt disorder. For 8 days, British and American soldiers patrolled the streets of Honolulu.

The Reciprocity Treaty

- Kalakaua signed the Reciprocity Treaty, which allowed Hawaiian sugar to enter the United States tax-free.

The Distrustful Haole...

- The white business men who planned/financed the sugar began to not trust Kalakaua. They didn't quite trust his judgement of taking certain actions in Hawaii, such as building I'olani Palace.
