The Convention of 1839 was a document that had eight articles which would keep the peace between the Hawaiians and the French. In my opinion, though King Kamehameha III signed the document, I feel like he would have disagreed with Article IV, which states that, "No Frenchmen, accused of any crime can be tried otherwise than by a jury composed of foreign residents, proposed by the Consul of France and accepted by the Government of the Sandwich Islands." because he would probably feel like the French are invading their own lands, and that they have no right to say whether they cannot be accused of anything. The French are not superior to the Hawaiians. The Hawaiians are superior to the French. They came to Hawaii. So why are they acting like they owned the islands, when in reality they didn't? Even though I feel like Kamehameha III disagreed with most of the articles on this document, I think he signed it so that him and the French would get off on a good start, as opposed to a bad one.
