King Kamehameha and the Unification of the Hawaiian Islands

King Kamehameha I was able to defeat the other cheifs and unify the islands by befriending the foreigners to his advantage, using their skills for his purposes. He controlled the realtions with the foreigners and internal system of the government, distributed lands he conquered to chiefs who had supported him, and appointed a governor for each island. The changes helped him regain his power because he literally strayed from tradition and just took control of everything in the government. Because of the missionaries invading the Hawaiian Islands, the government drastically changed towards the their lifestyle and values, and soon tried to convert all of the Hawaiians to Christianity.
